Proto.in SE ‘07: Nominations Outlook.

So the Nominations are closed – except a few exceptional cases of overseas entries and everyone is curious as to how the companies are looking like. Well, I have to say they are very interesting. There certainly is a fair bit of evolution and maturity in the companies, the business models and “edge blurring” happening, as models dissect across different categories.

That doesnt help me at all. I am trying to figure out a different way to segment these companies now, before the big day – something that I will be busy with for the next few weeks to come.

I will, in the next few days, put up another segmentation on the basis of the customers that these companies are targetting which should give a different perspective and insight into things. There are some interesting things going on with that as well.

I would certainly not want to kill the excitement by revealing too much about the nature of these companies and which market segment seems to be evolving at the fastest. But from the broad nature of categories and the pie size, a sharp eye can most certainly pick out the winner from here.

Proto.in SE Nominations Outlook

Presenters: Will be Notified on July First Week

The Companies that will be presenting for Proto.in SE ‘07 will be individually contacted and made aware of the results by the first week of July – at the latest. We also do intend on sending an email to the companies that did not quite make it along with input from our panel.

Best Wishes and Good luck!

Bangalore Roadshow – End of Day Two

The Second day was primarily full of meeting with individuals from the Media, the Investor Community and also with TiE Bangalore to come with concrete plans to move forward. We also had a meeting with Dolphin Advisory to touch base with them, as they are one of the sponsors of this edition of Proto

The Highlight of the day was in sitting down to come up with the event flow and first draft of the agenda for the upcoming edition of proto. Trust me when I say that we have found a way to incorporate every need that was raised by companies on the previous meeting that we had in IIM Bangalore. The Agenda looks very good. Once it is internally finalized, it will be up on the site for everyone to see.

Proto.in SE ‘07 is a two day event – for all its participants. While there are specifically focused sessions for the companies that are participating, we have come up with sessions that run parallely that are on topics such as “startup essentials 101″, “Corporate law” “How to Pitch to a VC” and also a track that is sheer delight for the technologist – a barcamp-like session that has unstructured sessions for people to explore different ideas, share perspectives and even mashup a few cool things if possible. There are also corporates who will be giving a short brief on the different platforms that they offer, which might be helpful for the same – with an earnest ear open to listen to the feedbacks and to integrate them into the scheme of things.

Technology can enable a lot of things. Here we are going to put it to work for networking. If you were not happy with the networking, or with the amount of time allocated towards it last time, you will be surprised and blown away by the efforts that have gone into it this time. Come prepared, bracing yourselves! :)

It was already a very productive day, and we are just down with meeting one.

We also met with a few folks from the Investor community who care about entrepreneurs more than most are aware of. Right from the Investors mouth, what we heard were things which we thought a VC would never utter: “We should educate the companies in terms of which clauses they should avoid and which they need to learn to live with, cause in the long run the ecosystem will really benefit and so will we”.

One of the things that we have in plans is to come up with a concrete set of plans to enable just that. We have folks from Law firms who have already volunteered to help create this awareness and are working on materials that companies could freely use. They will be distributed during the event.

I can already see most of the startups benefiting greatly out of these sessions. It is one of the most productive things that has come out of our interactions with the end-users themselves.

TiE Bangalore is officially partnered with Proto. There is a special invite to charter members across the country asking them to participate and get involved. Hats off to the Bangalore chapter for the support and enthusiasm they are showing in redefining the startup ecosystem and are very keen on improving what we have. Their open ears, keen interest and open mind was nothing short of impressive. Hats off to you guys!

Gentlemen, at the end of the roadshow at Bangalore, we seem to be having one heck of an event coming ahead! Next Stop Hyderabad.

Bangalore Roadshow Meet: Summary

We had a meeting with about 20 folks representing various elements of the ecosystem – the startups (especially the ones that are still in the ideation stage), a few folks from the Angel Investor Community, and also met with some exclusive interviews with the Press, in an attempt to understand and receive feedback to improve on what Proto could contribute and effectively provide more – all in an effort to match expectations with deliverables.

The Overall reception of Proto was quite good. Everyone does seem to understand and appreciate the effort that is going into Proto.

In Terms of further contributions,

Some of the common points that came out was the basic awareness that is required in terms of setting up a venture. A lot of people seem to be struggling to find the answers to questions such as the procedure in incorporating a company, the various finance options available, suggestions and advise while bootstrapping a company, putting together a business plan (especially the financial projection part), sound advice when it comes to raising funds – including how to pitch to a VC, the DOs and DONTs, and what are the various clauses that you need to be aware of, and even simple things as to what a “term sheet” and etc mean. We are already working on a couple of ways to see how we can accomodate this. There does seem to be partners within our own network that we have, who can definitely help in this aspect.

The Second aspect came from the Media front. It does seem to be a raging question as to why the media doesnt give startups the attention it requires. I am not sure if that is all together true. With the right platform, the media is open to give your case a representation. At the end of the day, it comes down to what their viewers and the general population requires. Startups and entrepreneurship are still not quite the popular lifestyle of choice. But we can definitely contribute towards that – but the timelines of impact and change, are still quite subject to a lot of other factors. There seems to be a lot of hope though in this direction.

One of the discussions also led to how the barcamps have effectively helped to contribute to this ecosystem in a very fruitful manner. Bangalore for example, has had two successful technology ventures thanks to the support and feedback that the bangalore barcamp team and attendees have been able to provide. The scope of such informal and supportive networks, simply cannot be neglected. It was and always has been a mandate of proto to support these efforts, and we will continue to work together with initiatives such as Barcamps, Mobile Mondays etc. This was a positive affirmation towards where we are heading.

There were a few companies that seem to be looking into acquiring their first set of customers or clients. This is where there is quite a challenge. It almost treads on lead generation. But we surely will look into if we can converge some of the mindshare in proto into effectively creating a network that could increase the chances of acquiring clients. We have done this informally, but we need to focus on making this more effective.

We also had some meetings with some folks in the Media – Economic Times, Business World and HT Mint. The support from these folks have been truly amazing and heart-warming. We really appreciate it.

Today is a day full of meetings with some venture capitalists and also with TiE Bangalore to finalize on our roles to play. A rough draft of the agenda for the event will be drawn up before today ends, and will be finalized before the end of next week.

Will update more on this tonight.

Roadshow In Bangalore Begins Today: Nominations Close: Registrations Open

In another three hours, a day begins with heading to Bangalore to meet with some Investors, Startups and people from the Technology Community to showcase the vision of proto and how we can further enhance the value that Proto as a platform provides. We are hoping to keep it an interactive session for the most part, hoping to learn, and listen to those who are the stakeholders of this initiative.

We are closing the Nominations in a few moments and as of now, we are at almost 100 nominations. The quality of companies that have come in, have really been amazing. While there were many a skeptics who were not sure if there were companies that could participate in Proto every six months, what we see today has definitely proven most of us wrong. We are certainly amazed and impressed by this.

The Registrations for attendees start today. The team has been working on the late hours of the night, making modifications to the site, getting the registration forms up and running the tests. As of now, the payment option is either by sending in a Cheque/DD or to do a wire transfer. All the details will be shot to you in an email once you register. If you should have any problems at all, just do let us know. There is a Registration ID that is generated, which is unique for everyone, while they register. Do quote that ID for any queries or confirmation. All the necessary contact details on available on the site, and are also mailed to you.

If you are going to be there in Bangalore’s meet today, I look forward to meeting you. We do have similar plans for the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad. If you are from any of these places, I look forward to meeting you soon.
